Human blood phageome in Crohn’s disease; our pipeline annotated the viral genomes of the study.
Our summary
Looking for new markers for an earlier diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, the study compared the virome of plasma and stool, sampled on the same day, in 15 people with Crohn’s disease and 14 healthy people. At group level, the composition of the blood virome (β-diversity) differs between patients and healthy subjects (p = 0.001), whereas that of the stool virome does not (p = 0.513, not significant): 46 differential viral genomes in blood, against 0 in stool.

rTOOLS v2 against SEA-PHAGES hand curation on 27 phages.
Our summary
Can a fully automatic pipeline match manual curation? We compared rTOOLS v2, run in fully automatic mode, with SEA-PHAGES hand curation on 27 phage genomes. Manual gene calling kept a slight edge: 1.5 more genes found per phage on average, and 1.2 genes per phage given an erroneous function by rTOOLS as a result. For functional annotation, rTOOLS gave a better annotation for 7.0 genes per phage on average, and SEA-PHAGES for 1.7.
